This is the best explanation of glossolalia that I found in 1975 when I researched the phenomenon. Samarin was a linguist and looked at the linguistic aspects of speaking in tongues (it isn't language) and sees it as a behavior related to childhood babble, where people randomly combine the phonemes of their native languages.
