Richard Russo was born in Johnstown, New York on July 15, 1949. He received a Bachelor's degree, a Master of Fine Arts degree, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Arizona. He taught at numerous colleges including Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Colby College. He has vis mere written numerous books including Mokawk, The Risk Pool, Straight Man, Bridge of Sighs, and That Old Cape Magic, as well as a short story collection, The Whore's Child. His novel Empire Falls won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and Nobody's Fool was made into a movie starring Paul Newman, Bruce Willis and Melanie Griffith. His memoir was entitled Elsewhere. He also co-wrote the 1998 film Twilight with director Robert Benton and the teleplay for the HBO adaptation of Empire Falls. Empire Falls er en mindre og hendøende provinsby i Maine befolket af ægte og håndfaste arketyper. Der er tale om mange enkeltpersoner, som efterhånden i bogen væver sig ind i et fælles net, hvor der på det nærmeste går tråde mellem de fleste personer. De er samlet omkring den 42-årige Miles Roby, der bestyrer byens grillrestaurant. Han er den alt for flinke fyr, som næsten alle kan lide, og som alle mener skulle gøre noget for at sætte lidt mere gang i livet.Der er et væld af små og store historier om byen og dens personer og deres indbyrdes relationer, alt sammen under kontrol af den nu aldrende enke Francine Whitting, der stadig ejer det halve af byen.
Det er en rigtig god bog om livet i et hensygnende provinshul, skrevet med varme og ikke mindst humor og ironi. Personerne får lov til at folde sig ud på godt og ondt, og der ikke tvivl om forfatterens sym- og antipatier. Bogen fik i 2002 Pulitzerprisen. Jeg har læst bedre 'Pulitzerbøger' - men nød absolut også dette glimrende stykke americana.… (mere)
