- Heleen van Royen wordt op 9 maart 1965 als Helena Margaretha Kroon geboren in Slotervaart, Amsterdam-West. In 1983 doet Van Royen eindexamen VWO. In 1984 wordt ze ingeloot voor de School voor de Journalistiek in Utrecht, waar ze in 1987 afstudeert. Na haar studie werkt Van Royen bij als redacteur bij Haarlems Dagblad, als verslaggever bij Radio Noord-Holland en als freelancer bij diverse tijdschriften. Heleen van Royen debuteerde in 2000 met de kaskraker De gelukkige huisvrouw. Haar debuutroman is vertaald in acht landen en werd internationaal lovend ontvangen. Theatergezelschap Het Vervolg voerde de gelijknamige bewerking van haar boek met veel succes op in heel Nederland en er is een film over gemaakt. Heleen van Royen schreef tevens wekelijks een column in Het Parool en op Planet Internet. In 2003 verscheen Godin van de jacht, dat meteen na verschijning de eerste plaats van tal van bestsellerlijsten veroverde. In anderhalf jaar tijd gingen ruim 200.000 Godinnen over de toonbank, het boek was de best verkochte Nederlandse roman van 2003. De film- en vertaalrechten zijn ook al verkocht. Naast drie controversiële romans schreef Heleen van Royen tussen 2002 en 2004 een serie spraakmakende columns voor Het Parool en Planet Internet. Eind 2003 verscheen een selectie van haar columns in Je zal er maar mee getrouwd zijn. Heleens derde roman, De ontsnapping, verscheen begin 2006, werd genomineerd voor de NS Publieksprijs en in elf talen vertaald. De rechten op de Franse uitgave van De ontsnapping zijn onlangs verkocht.

Het boek leest in 1 keer uit, dus is vlot geschreven, maar het lijkt alleen maar het begin van het verhaal... net als het verhaal goed op gang komt is het boek uit.
Pretty good book. Thought I'd read it before but couldn't remember a thing so that was nice. Not world changing but okay.
Vintage van Royen who congratulates herself at least five times with the conception of this idea – a sex diary, where she will for one whole year meticulously record the sexual interactions she has as a 50-plus milf with her 20 years younger boyfriend (who is a drummer in a ‘famous’ Dutch band and has a busy job at some tv studio as producer).
Van Royen writes pretty explicit about the sex she has, though the sex is often void of any emotional charge or reflection. Sex is fun, should be fun, and we should all do away with any taboos around sex, seems to be the message. The descriptions follow a predictable pattern. Either Heleen or her bf indicates s/he wants to fuck; they fuck (the positions are recorded in the diary; knight stand, doggy (to finish), standing in front of a wall from behind (often in the shower), missionary (when Heleen wants to cum without the use of sex toys), Heleen on top (when she is the initiator, lying in bed). In other instances Heleen offers a blow job, which then ends with a creamy finish or gets her going for more. The descriptions end with news about the finishing: did Heleen cum? If so, long and shallow, or hard and intense? Bart normally asks where he is allowed to spray his load. Heleen duly records where his seed went (inside, on her face, all over her tits, or on pubic area, or her ass).
What I omitted so far is the frequent use of a variety of sex toys. Normally Heleen uses at least a vibrator during the intercourse, or the womanizer (probably a sponsor for this novel – it receives an orgy of praise from Heleen). The womanizer is a suction tool that one can place on one’s clit and vary in suction power. Bart only complains once in the book about the distractive humming sound, produced by such toys.
What transpires from the diary is that Heleen and Bart have a sex life that invites envy. Heleen acts the perfect porn queen, in fact (how many men are allowed to spray paint the face of their wives with cum?). Heleen is submissive, playful, needy and hardly ever says no, to sex. Bart is a fuck machine. He is masculine, rough, predictable, easy to satisfy, always at the ready. Perhaps it was a conscious choice of Heleen, but Bart appears to have a lot in common with her sex toys: at hand, bringing her to the orgasm she desires, always ready to go unless the battery is flat (or drenched in too much alcohol). The couple leads a carefree, glamorous life, being invited to VIP events, top restaurants, travelling to and fro her second house in Portugal, hanging out with (wealthy, famous) friends and seemingly never encountering the dark sides of life. Seemingly, because in fact Heleen is just finishing her documentary on her demented mom’s departure from earthly life. This emotional journey takes place during the recording of the sex diary and might explain the hiatus between January and May, when no recorded sex takes place. I found that an interesting omission. Apparently Heleen wishes to avoid mixing feelings with her happy-clappy sex frolics. In the book she intersperses such ‘droughts’ with erotic stories (of high quality, displaying emotional layers that she subsequently completely ignores in the descriptions of her own sex life). Overall this separation of the emotional life of the couple from their sex frolics does not leave the reader satisfied. It solicits the same emotional response as plastic. One can hardly relate to either Bart or Heleen. One can only be envious of their sexual prowess and become inspired in one’s own sex life (though I for one have yet to meet a woman who watches porn herself, but that’s probably just me, no?).… (mere)

Ik werd lichtelijk groen van sommige beschrijvingen van de aanloop naar een bevalling. Hu. Naar mate het einde dichterbij kwam werd het boek steeds minder slecht.
