wow.
dare I give this book a 4 stars?
maybe a 3.5, or even a 4 stars with this one. Killer ending, absolutely wrapped everything up. Amazing.
I've been so deprived of good literature after reading other supposedly good YA fiction (according to goodreads ratings). This was great book. It's sad that adult realistic fiction is probably dirty (or so I'm assuming from other books I've tried to read in that genre) because they COULD be quite sensible and achieve some sort of literary decency, but I'm not even going to try to see if there are sensible ones because that's not something I need in my life.

(I seriously miss 1990s literature. It seemed everything was a little more realistic back then, as far as YA books go, as well as cleaner)

I digress.

The 411:

the good:
solid theme/
solid morals
solid ending, wraps everything up nicely
realistic character interactions and plot events
not really dramatic/ no nonsense
suspensful
fun read/quick to read
author is compassionate towards characters
a little sad
good ending, not undeserved. not super happy but not super sad.

The bad:
A little simple. Some might even consider it to be (by construction of sentences and some plot occurrences) contrived or cheezy. Personally, I did not

The ugly:
dare I say.... nothing?

The personal:
set in the 1990s....

15-year-old Sean, a kid who has grown up in a dysfunctional and abusive family, finally gets a break and a new start on life when he is sentenced to 80 hours community service on a farm run by Dave Hassler, an elderly war veteran and widower. This is an extremely well-written and touching story. Brings to light that heroes can be anywhere and anyone. Recommended read.

When Shadow Thompson's older brother, Daniel, returns after being away seven years, Shadow isn't sure how he feels about it. Daniel has a secret past, and after being charged with murder, Shadow's brother called their parents to come bail him out of jail. The family dynamics in this story are so skillfully crafted and the hook that holds the reader intrigued is the wait to find out the circumstances behind the murder charge. But also, while that's going on, you can't help wanting Shadow, the tale's first-person narrator and protagonist, to succeed at his high school. The nickname of Shadow, given to him by Daniel years before, so aptly fits. Shadow even dresses the part, always wearing black, and he is a quiet thoughtful teen. Even so, Shadow signs up for the Debating Team at the beginning of classes because he wants to make friends and fit in. And of course there's a girl, Robin, that he's interested in -- the repartee between Shadow and Robin while in the library at the end of the first chapter is especially entertaining. There are so many reasons this is an exceptional YA book that I'll say no more. I won't cheat other readers out of discovering those things for themselves. I highly recommend reading S. L. Rottman's book SHADOW OF A DOUBT, and I expect to find others written by her to read myself -- ASAP.… (mere)

I would use this book in an older range middle school setting due to its sensitive topics. I would use this book to have my students create character depictions of the main character, important characters, and side characters. Once the students did this, I would have them build a chart and diagram on connections they have built up as we read the text. With these connections in mind, I would have my students create a story of a character that overcomes a great obstacle in their life.
