In my opinion this is a good book for multiple reasons. First, I enjoy the descriptive language used throughout the text. For example, when the author states "Within minutes the hissing and crackling flames reached the homestead. Showers of sparks sailed over the fireguard" as a reader, I can both hear and picture the scene of a horrific wild fire. Another reason I believe this is a good book, is due to its rising action within the plot. After briefing our knowledge of prairie fires, the main character is out playing when he spots a cloud of black smoke. Next, the author constructs a series of events leading up to the fire encountering their home. For example, first the father must release the ox's, prepare the house, and load the rain water all while the fire is quickly approaching.
