I was fortunate to win an autographed copy in an author giveaway. There are a number a things about this book that click for me - it's origins in New York, its Civil War setting, the women who forge their way into what had always been traditional male roles, and the peppering of actual historical figures into the novel. I'm way out of practice with critiquing writing for a young adult audience, but I think the fact that the book won a number of recognitions must speak to that. I hope that there are young women still reading historical fiction and not being consumed by aliens, vampires and werewolves(figuratively, not literally!)because they will find this a very enjoyable and educational read.… (mere)
