This is a tough novel to describe. The story is told from the viewpoints of three people who meet casually one day: a world-famous, world-weary, world-traveling feature writer for The New Yorker; a mathematics professor obsessed with the nature of time; and a young woman making herself over in New York City who attracts the interest of both men. The writing is wonderful, the three main characters fully drawn and interesting to the reader. What happens to them as they draw closer and closer to an understanding of the natures of time and reality is challenging, magical, and suspenseful all at once. Superb.… (mere)
