This is a great book to bring awareness to this! It is a great book to help bring perspective. I would use this in my class... maybe 3-5

This story is about Maria and Juan, and them going to see their abuela. They live in the United States and their abuela lives in Mexico so they have to visit on the border between the gates. Juan drew their abuela a picture of them and isn't able to give it to her so, Maria makes a kite to fly it over to her abuela. I think this is a really sweet story, and could be used to show how some family cannot visit as normally as others. I think it would make a good read aloud book for younger students.

Relatively encouraging for students whose families may live in another state or country. Brings a sense of light and hope to students' own personal stories brining ideas of how to encourage family members.

I would definitely have this book in my classroom library. It features a girl and her family who wait at the US/Mexico border to see their grandmother for Christmas.
If I were to use it in my classroom, it would go well with conversations about grandparents, different family structures, and related topics. This content is probably appropriate for 1st or 2nd grade.
