David Payne is the author of three previous novels: Confessions of a Taoist on Wall Street, which won the prestigious Houghton Mifflin Literary Fellowship Award; Early from the Dance; and Ruin Creek. This book was very slow for me to get into but once I did, around Part V or VI, I was hooked! it tells the story of Joe and Day, two people drawn together by fate along the Outer Banks of NC. Joe is an ethnologist and Day is a physician, especially for women. She also performs abortions. As their lives become entwined, various things happen that curiously mirror the things that happened to Joe's father and mother. After a disagreement with Day, Joe and his shipmates head out on a fishing trip but are drawn into a rescue attempt on another boat and a bad storm is bearing down on them. What will happen? It becomes a page turner towards the end if you can stick it out that long.… (mere)
