The She Shed by Leah Orr MAY2023LTER i Reviews of Early Reviewers Books (juni 2023)

This book is appropriately named, because some of these characters are nuttier than a fruitcake. Holly is a newcomer to the cul-de-sac, and she quickly bonds with her three new friends, Gina, Greta, and Chloe. One new tradition that they decide to participate in is taking a fruitcake at Christmas time to one chosen person, supposedly to bring them good luck in the coming year. And I mean supposedly, because in reality, it doesn’t really work. In fact, it seems to have the opposite effect. Men disappear, then reappear days later, changed in personality and even physically damaged. And then, one Christmas Eve, Holly goes to deliver her fruitcake, and approaching the doorstep, hears a scream, and sees the intended recipient holding a bloody hatchet while an injured man lies at her feet. And so begins this delightful, if disturbing, Christmas tale of friendships, traditions, family, and justice. And if the courts of law can’t give you justice, there are other means one can follow. If you haven’t committed a crime that you think you got away with, then you have nothing to fear. But just to be on the safe side, you shouldn’t plan on moving to Laguna Palms any time soon. Author Leah Orr has penned a well written and wonderfully wicked novel, set at Christmas in a lovely neighborhood. The characters are mostly nice, except for those couple or so who may possess some twisted ideas. But it’s all a big secret, and even those who participate in the schemes unwillingly are willing to keep the secret. It’s better for everyone if they do. This novel is not only filled with suspense, many twists along the way, and surprises galore, but also has included some very tasty fruitcake recipes. Why not bake one and deliver it to your neighbor this Christmas . . . if you dare! I received an ARC paperback copy of this novel from the author, and I recommend it everyone who enjoys reading mysteries and suspense. And enjoying fruitcakes.… (mere)

Very quick read, not what I really expected and had a weird, kind of unsettling ending. I enjoyed reading this although it seemed to have been written and edited as quickly as possible. Still a fun easy read.

I really wanted to like this, mostly because I loved the cover art and I like the idea of having a cozy little hideout tucked away in the back yard, separate from your responsibilities and mundane everyday life. But I found the writing stilted and awkward, especially the dialogue. Also numerous cases where the author misused words - words which were close to what she was clearly trying to say, but just wrong in context. The characters were superficial and not particularly likeable, and I had trouble caring what happened to them. The basic plot was pretty unrealistic but overall okay, I guess. Fortunately, it was a pretty quick read, if not a particularly enjoyable one.… (mere)

Aunt Adeline has some secrets . . . and now she's disappeared as well. Her niece, Charlotte, is frantic to find her, and in the process of looking for her she begins to find out about the family skeletons in the closet, or in this case, the backyard. She has help from Adeline's friends, or are they really just misdirecting her?

The She Shed is a short, fast-paced tale of murder, mayhem and muffins. It brings several surprising plot elements, and I especially enjoyed the portrayal of the older characters as real people who are still enjoying their lives, which too often is not how older people are portrayed. The author brings creativity and originality to her characters and the plot, and she does a good job of balancing the macabre with the humorous. The romantic elements are playful and fun and there's a bit of a devil may care recklessness throughout the story that kept me turning the pages to see what these people would get up to next. The few sad moments are managed with appropriate sensitivity and empathy, and they add some realism to the story.

I enjoyed the originality and the great characters in this book. I'm glad I read it!
