My Thoughts:
I'm glad I bumped into Jenny O'Brien. I would read her again. Unfortunately, book two is not coming out until next year

This is my first crime fiction where we have a paraplegic detective as the main protagonist. Interesting to see how the detective would manage an investigation with a huge obstacle in her way. She can't just walk up and chase bad guys anymore...

My question is, what ended her marriage?...

Another thing, the editor needs to be told that "balance" is not spelled "bAlance".

Funnily enough, reading this book feels like reading one of Lt. Eve Dallas' books by JD Robb. I wonder why that is?...

This is my first Michele Moran listen and I would buy her again.

Volume 2 of this series was a lot better than the first book in my opinion. The story opens in the middle of the action with Christine waking up with a bad hangover and finding to her horror that she has been sharing the bed not with a man she brought home the previous night - something she has certainly not made a habit of - but with the dead body of a woman she knew from college and had been giving a home to for the past few weeks. She then becomes the chief suspect in the murder. The book is told partly from her point of view and partly from the dead woman's in a few flashbacks, but mainly from the viewpoint of Gaby Darin, the detective whose adventures form this series.

This time Gaby is much more a central character and the reader gets a clearer idea of what occurred in Cardiff, the first blot on her copybook which was referred to in book 1 but not fully spelled out. Now Gaby has had another transfer this time to North Wales and is hoping to live down her experience in Swansea where she feels responsible for not flagging up her doubts about a senior officer - something she had been reluctant to do after being scapegoated for whistleblowing in Cardiff. She has made some friends including Amy, the Family Liaison Officer who befriended her in Swansea and who managed to transfer with her. She is starting to find acceptance at last and some recognition of her abilities, though I did find her rather meteoric rise through the ranks after years of being held back rather hard to believe. I do not find the writing or characters engaging enough to continue the series, but am rating this volume as a 3 star read.

This is the first volume of a series but I didn't find that Gaby Darin, whose series it is meant to be, featured much in this book. The story is mainly told from two viewpoints. The first is that of Izzy who, five years before the story starts, had just had a baby. Her partner took the baby out for a drive to give her some quiet time as she was exhausted and never came home. Later, a postcard pushed through the door said that he had gone away with the child. The police were never able to locate him. Now another postcard arrives assuring her that the child is fine but she should never try to find them. Still grieving, Izzy sees Rhys, the detective who had been in charge of the case and tells him about the postcard. Most of the rest of the book is in the viewpoint of Rhys. Gaby has occasional appearances which increase in frequency towards the end of the story. The reader does get the gist of her backstory -she had to leave the force in Cardiff due to an extra marital affair and having acted as whistleblower regarding a colleague - but I never really took to her as a character. For me, this was an OK 2 star read but no more than that.… (mere)

Now this is how to start a new detective series!
Detective Alana Mack, known to all as Alan heads up the case of a missing person along with her partner Paddy, but what starts out as a missing person case soon escalates when an abandoned toddler is found in a supermarket with a note put into her pocket requesting that the police don’t try to find her for the sake of her life and the life of the child.
Then, on top of that, a bag of human organs gets brought into the station.
As they find out that the child is a DNA match for several of the found organs another person goes missing.
How is this abandoned child, the human remains and several missing people connected?
This book contains a little bit of gore in it and some highly addictive detective work as the team work hard making all the pieces fit as they try to track down the child’s mother as well as the perpetrator of the missing men and the connection to the bag of organs.
This is a fast paced, hard to put down book that had me reading way into the night as I couldn’t put it down.
If you enjoy a really good detective story with a wickedly clever plot then this is the perfect book for you.
I can’t wait to see where Detective Alana Mack finds herself next!
