I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. Elly has never felt like she fit in. So when a handsome artist sweeps her off her feet, she falls deeply in love. That is, until that fateful day when she catches him with another woman. Suddenly her whole world is turned upside down and that's when Elly realizes she's much stronger than she had ever thought.

This was a fantastic first novel by author Colleen Oakes. Elly is written to be a realistic main character with the desires and insecurities we all have. She takes us her journey (with a few bumps in the road) to finding herself and overcoming heartbreak. There will be times you'll laugh with her and others you'll want to cry with her. I enjoyed this novel so much, Elly became a fast friend and I look forward to many more adventures. If you like Chick Lit and a light read, then this is certainly the book for you!… (mere)

I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Princess Dinah is preparing to be queen and rule their kingdom alongside her father. Her coronation will be on her eighteenth birthday or so she had hoped. Not only is her father plotting against her, but his aide Cheshire as well (this Cheshire isn’t a cat).

This is a great story that draws you into another world. There’s a slight romantic interest, but nothing comes of it so this is definitely not a romance novel. The characters were so well described that you immediately connect with them. This is a great take on Wonderland’s Queen of Hearts; could we be reading a possibility of how she became evil?

Colleen Oakes has begun an amazing dark fantasy series with Queen of Hearts, one I’m sure everyone will enjoy! I can’t wait to find out what happens in book two.

I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

The Wonder is book two in the Queen of Hearts series. The story picks up where book one left off. Dinah is still on the run and being hunted by the king. There’s a mysterious man aiding her along the way. Dinah is bent on avenging her brother’s murder and reclaiming her rightful place as Queen of Hearts. As she changes from a lost child to a warrior driven by revenge, she’s reunited with Cheshire, the King’s advisor now swearing loyalty to her, and also Wardley her one true love.

This story was as fast paced as the previous book. You’re immediately drawn in and captivated by the descriptions of the Twisted Woods and Yurkei lands. There’s non-stop action and edge of your seat excitement as you watch Dinah’s heart slowly grow cold. This is a unique twist on the Alice in Wonderland tale and definitely a must read for all fantasy lovers!

Most people probably know the Peter Pan story whether or not they have read the book. He is such a famous figure and there are a couple of movies out there. I read the book in my teens so my memory of the book is, well not that good, but I have seen movies so I think I know the story quite well.

I must admit that the cover was one of the reasons for that made me request the book that and it seemed to be a much darker story. I was a bit wary about it being YA since I really don't like reading YA that much, but it turned out that this story was a bit darker than I expect from YA books. But it could be that I just haven't read the right YA books.

This retelling is truly darker than the original story. The Lost boys and Peter Pan and their adventures with the pirates are much more lethal. Here, we have boys that really fight pirates that stab them with swords, etc. and Peter Pan is really adapt to killing pirates. And, the pirates kill Lost boys as well. I mean one of the Lost Boys gets his throat cut.

I was a bit annoyed with John, Wendy's brother. He was just awfully rude and spiteful throughout the book towards Wendy. I just didn't like him very much, but Wendy's little brother Michael was sweet. Then, there is Peter Pan. He is still very much full of himself and frankly not a very nice person. Since this is a YA is Wendy's relationship with Peter Pan a bit more mature. Well no sex, but much more kissing and stuff.

But I had some problem connecting with the story. It was good, I liked the retelling and I liked the darker tone. I just really didn't fully enjoy the book. It felt that something was missing. I have a suspicious feeling that the next book in this series will be better since one very special person didn't make an appearance until the very last minute. And, that makes me eager to read the next book since I think that person's present will make the story more intriguing.

Thanks to SparkPress and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
