C'est un pays qui a toujours fait figure de leader. Les domaines ? En biologie, en astronomie, en médecine, en histoire… Un peu partout quoi ! La science chinoise a connu très tôt un développement considérable, dont Joseph Needham dresse ici l'inventaire. Mais il n'y a pas que cela… Il y a bien autre chose. Il y a aussi une masse de découvertes techniques ! Des exemples ? La boussole, la boussole magnétique il va sans dire, le harnais adapté au cheval, étrier à pied, poudre à canon et bien d’autres choses. Tout cela, quand c'est arrivé en Europe, a produit un véritable bouleversement. Comme quoi qu'il n'y a pas que le cerf-volant qui vient de Chine ou encore la soie et les épices. Joseph Needham est un spécialiste de la culture et de la civilisation chinoise. Lui et ses collaborateurs ont déjà publié sept volumes dont cinq sont déjà parus et qui ont comme titre : ‘Science et civilisation en Chine". De quoi vous faire passer de bons moments.

This is an amazing book. The first thing you notice is how beautiful it is, well-made, a gorgeous cover, flawless typesetting, meticulous note-keeping. It is also well-organised in its conception and the nerd in me welcomes the fact that for all Chinese names the Chinese characters are given in the footnotes, so sinologists can derive the full benefit. Arab names are given in scientific transliteration. Modern scholarship has probably superseded some of his statements, but not to an extent that would make the book obsolete. I enjoyed the observations he made when travelling in China when so many of the things he writes about could still be seen. Wonderful.… (mere)

Since 1954, Needham and an international team of collaborators meticulously researched the science, technology, and civilization of ancient China. The project continues today.
