When I tutored ESL students, this was one of the few books I saw them reading that seemed relatable to their experiences: Yanyan, the main character, wants to be a doctor and gets a chance to go to school in the U.S. and struggles with the language, making friends, college.

This story is about two young boys name Yang and Matthew. Yang is in a family where music is very important and the rest of the family is very musically involved. However, Yang is not very good at music and is better at playing sports such as baseball. Then there is Matthew, his family is into sports and likes to participate in athletic events such as baseball, however Matthew isn't good at baseball he is good at music. Eventually Matthew and Yang realize that their interests aren't the same as their families and that is okay. I liked this story because it shows diversity because it portrays an Asian American boy and family as main characters, and it shows that just because certain people are interested in one thing doesn't mean other people has to be. My sister has experienced something similar to Matthew growing up in my family.… (mere)
