I haven’t read any of Piers’ newspaper columns, don’t watch Britain’s got an X-Factor Apprentice shows, am not on Twitter & didn’t even know he hosted a breakfast show till I heard he had flounced off one. But I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Misadventures of a Big Mouth Brit’ & ‘The Insider’ for their humour, exuberance & life-experience, so happy to read this free copy, thank you OverDrive.

‘Wake Up’ is written in the form of a diary between January - July 2020 as Covid emerged and gripped the world. And Piers diaries how he uses his various platforms to hold the government to account & voice what I imagine most of us were thinking: why aren’t we locking down earlier? why are covid patients being sent to care-homes? why are flights still allowed? Why can Cummings test his eye-sight in a car-jaunt when parents aren’t allowed to be with their child as he is dying alone in a hospital?

I understand Piers is a marmite figure, but the ‘pantomime villain’ sounds mostly a sensible chap within these pages. He argues passionately against ‘cancel culture virtue signallers’ & for freedom of speech, tolerance & civil debate (though hypocritically undermines himself by calling for David Starkey to be banned from tv for his racist views - huh?)

In general he sounds the alarm, warning of the danger of the rise of toxic tribalism & of those with entrenched views believing those who dont slavishly agree are not only wrong but stupid, preventing debate, understanding & conciliation.

A fascinating, thought-provoking read about lots of people enjoying getting angry & shouting on social media. But, call me cynical - that flouncing off a tv show got huge publicity, just in time to promote this rant-of-an-essay...

I have been following Piers Morgan lately and his association with the T.V.show GMB and his fury over Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's life choices and communication styles so I was interested to see what he had to say about the present "woke" and cancel cultures and he does have PLENTY to say. Surpirse, surprise! He is a diarist so outlines the first 6 months of the pandemic Jan. to July of 2020 and covers stories that happened during that time. He is challenged by many concerns, mostly illiberal liberalism and government mishandling of the pandemic. With the aid of his tv work he has supported many positive endeavors (knighthood of Sir Tom Moore). It was an interesting read but sort of a one horse race. He is an excellent and experienced writer and a strong advocate for free speech and open debate. I just greatly wish there was a similar personality in Canada who would hold a few feet to the fire!… (mere)

Although I’m conservative by nature, and this book’s author is a liberal, his views mirror mine on the majority of topics discussed in “Wake Up”.

Piers Morgan is a champion of common sense and the right of free speech. By using quotes from the past year or so, he highlights the insanity and inanity of “illiberal liberals” who are a minority unable to accept that not everyone agrees with them, and who are infuriated when their views are opposed.

I found the narrative engaging from start to finish. This is no surprise, considering what a lively personality the author is.

An excellent read.

Tittle tattle, the vibrant, smelly, lumpy morass that is the modern media.

That's it.
