Arthur Opp, a former professor of literature, has been shut up in his parents' mansion in Brooklyn for more than ten years. At over 500 lbs, this isolation is largely self-imposed; after all, moving beyond a few steps tires him and modern convenience allows for most everything he needs to be delivered right to his door. He hasn't been to the second floor of his house in more than a decade. For years, his only personal connection to the outside world has been letter correspondence with a former student. Twenty miles away, in Yonkers, seventeen-year-old Kel struggles of his own: the poor kid in a rich school, and an alcoholic mother. She is the link between these protagonists, an unlikely pair whose connection will change both of their lives.
