Om forfatteren

Yukio Mishima, the pseudonym for Hiraoka Kimitake, was born in Tokyo in 1925. His work covers many styles: poetry, essays, modern Kabuki ja Noh drama, and novels. Among his masterpieces are The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, and the four-volume novel Sea of Fertility, which outlines the Japanese vis mere experience in the 20th century. Each of the four volumes in this series has a distinct title--Spring Snow, Runaway Horses, The Temple of Dawn, and Five Signs of a God's Decay--and they were published over a six-year period, from 1965-1970. Mishima's plays include Tenth Day Chrysanthemum, and the Kabuki piece The Moon Like a Drawn Bow. Although Mishima was been nominated three times for the Nobel Prize for Literature, he never received it. Nevertheless, he is considered by many critics as one of the most important Japanese novelists of the 20th century. Yukio Mishima died by his own hand in 1970, committing seppuku (ritual disembowelment). (Bowker Author Biography) vis mindre

Kort biografi
Three-time winner of the Yomiuri Prize (1956 in literature, 1958 and 1961 in drama), winner of the Shinchosha Prize (1954), the Kunio Kishida Award (1956), the Mainichi Art Award (1964), and the Ministry of Education's Arts Festival Award (1965), "Mishima Yukio was probably the most prodigiously endowed Japanese writer of the twentieth century. Although he was only forty-five when he died, under spectacular circumstances that brought him worldwide fame, he had already completed a more voluminous oeuvre than most writers who live twice that long. His writings extended to every genre. Although he was best known as a novelist, he excelled also as a short-story writer. His works of fiction ranged from the philosophic to the farcical; he could write in whatever style was appropriate to each. He published numerous essays on literary, political, cultural and purely journalistic topics. He was also the most successful playwright of his generation." There's a reason people love Mishima even after so long, and for those new to his work this would be the ideal place to start. A woman in her fifties entertains guests at her restaurant, and feels drawn to a semi-retired politician in his sixties. They embark on a quiet romance leading to marriage. But he is a stubborn man born of old Japanese custom, and expects no need to compromise in his new life. She, on the other hand, is active, energetic, always looking for ways to be true to herself. When her husband is nominated as the Radical candidate in the local elections, how will she manage to contain her passion for interference and for action?… (mere)

This is the third Yukio Mishima novel I've read and it seems that I prefer their style to their substance. Perhaps because not a great deal happens and what does is often described obliquely. [b:The Frolic of the Beasts|35952941|The Frolic of the Beasts (Vintage International)|Yukio Mishima|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1513997033l/35952941._SY75_.jpg|14583930] concerns the fraught relationship between a married couple and the young man, Koji, who had an affair with the wife. The narrative follows Koji after an act of violence that sent him to prison. The narrative is atmospheric, tense, and bleak, which appears characteristic of Mishima based on what I've read so far. There is also a particular fixation on minor material details:

There was no great outcry or quarrel, events so far had run as fluidly as water - and then stopped; the four of them observed one another as if looking through a transparent glass wall, a glass wall that had suddenly been erected before their eyes, and that was extremely difficult to navigate.

There was a marvelously surreal aspect to this truly wretched, mundane portrayal of reality. It was almost hallucinatory in its crystal clarity. Koji recalled how the thoroughly creased sheet, which had appeared from beneath the displaced feather quilt, looked very much like a collection of lines drawn by an abstractionist depicting a diagram of movements.

I appreciated the unusual quality of Mishima's writing and the translation, while finding the depictions of love, sex, and violence in [b:The Frolic of the Beasts|35952941|The Frolic of the Beasts (Vintage International)|Yukio Mishima|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1513997033l/35952941._SY75_.jpg|14583930] nihilistic and depressing. The reader knows from the first paragraph that the novel will end tragically, yet I was left wondering why. Koji's actions remain a mystery when he seemingly was not trapped and could simply have left.

'Spring Snow' took quite a while to absorb me. The writing is beautiful and the atmosphere of Japan in 1912 very vivid. The difficulty, though, was that the main character Kiyoaki failed to attract my sympathy. He has been brought up with extreme refinement and delicacy, without responsibilities or pressures. As a result he has become deeply self-involved and only interested in his own internal life. Indeed, he seems to be wholly emotionally masochistic, determined to wallow in heartbreak and frustration for its own sake. It is as if the lack of strong emotion and challenges in his life drive him to manufacture his own. This is most emphatically shown by his interest in pursuing a woman he's known from childhood only awakening once she seemingly becomes unavailable.

Whilst this is interesting to observe, it is also frustrating. Kiyoaki's lassitude weighs upon the narrative, as I'm sure it is intended to. I felt more enthusiasm when Mishima's focus temporarily shifted to Honda, Satoko, and, especially, Tadeshina the maid (who gave me the impression of being the character with the most agency and power). That said, I couldn't help but appreciate the extreme non-involvement philosophy of Satoko's father, generally referred to as the Count:

'Just let matters slide. How much better to accept each sweet drop of the honey that was Time, than to stoop to the vulgarity latent in every decision. However grave the matter at hand might be, if one neglected it for long enough, the act of neglect itself would begin to affect the situation and someone would emerge as an ally.'

That seems like the most elegant possible mode of expressing, 'Can't someone else do it?' Snippets like that greatly pleased me, but for the most part I found this novel's atmosphere stifling thanks to to Kioaki's point of view. Like him, it is beautiful but frustratingly blinkered. Mishima is a wonderful writer, though, and I intend to read more by him.

'The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With The Sea' somehow manages to be a short & sharp, but also meandering novel. I remain baffled as to how Mishima manages this balance. 'Spring Snow', the only other novel of his that I've read, is unequivocally slow and digressive. This one is likewise beautifully written in a meditative, metaphor-laden style. Mishima describes momentary feelings wonderfully, capturing their specificity with striking precision.

Regarding the plot, though, I felt that the blurb on this edition gave away too much. In fact, it was a synopsis of everything that happened! Moreover, it created an expectation that the thirteen year old boys' strange view of the world would be explained. I didn't feel that it ever was, at least not to my satisfaction. The motives of the boys remained somewhat oblique. Whilst that may well have been intentional, I would have liked more about the gang, rather than Noburu alone. Perhaps I feel this way because the blurb implied a different emphasis? (It must be rather difficult to write an effective blurb. Unlike an executive summary or abstract, blurbs must intrigue whilst not giving too much away.) If you're planning to read this book, I'd strongly suggest not reading the back cover, as I think the less you know about the novel the more you'll appreciate it.

I was most invested in 'The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With The Sea' at the very end. The last few pages are incredibly tense; the last paragraph probably the most effective in the book. For much of the rest I wasn't terribly involved, despite enjoying the beautiful imagery. The ending, though, was very well done. I don't see how else it could have ended, in fact.
