English Professor
Charles Carroll Mish, 79, a professor emeritus of English at the University of Maryland who was a specialist in 17th century literature and early fiction, died Dec. 30 1992 at Suburban Hospital after a heart attack. He lived in Chevy Chase.
Mr. Mish moved to the Washington area in 1948 to join the university faculty.In addition to early literature, his courses included history of the novel, detective fiction, popular fiction and narratology, the theory of the narrative. He also was director of graduate studies for the English department and a member of the campus senate and the divisional and campus promotion and tenure committees. He retired in 1984.
He wrote two books, "English Prose Fiction 1600-1700" and "Restoration Prose Fiction 1666-1700," and was editor of "The Anchor Anthology of Short Fiction of the 17th Century."
Mr. Mish, a native of Williamsport, Pa., received bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in English from the University of Pennsylvania. Early in his career, he was custodian of the university's Furness Library and a reference librarian.
He was head of the English section of the bibliographical committee of the Modern Language Association and a member of its international bibliographical committee. He also belonged to the Bibliographical Society of London and America and the Renaissance Society of America.
His wife, Mary Faulkner Mish, died in 1974. He leaves no immediate survivors.
