In "What Survives in Us" by Kathy Miner started off okay but halfway through, it didn't appear like it was going in the direction I expected. A plague descends upon the world and kills 99% of the inhabitants; of the remaining 1%, some are immune, others get sick and slowly recover. Once they recover, they find that they've changed: some seeing future events in their dreams, some able to communicate with animals, others becoming knowledgeable in certain areas (farming, botany, and other specialties). Family's are split up and spread across the country, all members are trying to get back to Colorado and their loved ones. Enroute, they must evade other groups of survivors who have become sadists, rapists, and stone cold killers. The story is told from several different viewpoints and of the trials and tribulations they experience during their trek. I found the most interesting POV from Naomi and her daughter and found myself skimming or skipping pages during the other storylines. The book ended abruptly and without a hint of what readers may expect in the next installment. I wasn't left overly excited at the end and don't really have an interest in reading more about this tale, so, I'll pass on moving forward.… (mere)
