"Combining biblical truths and scientific facts, beautifully illustrated The Things God Made reveals the greatness of God's creation alongside scientific facts about our incredible universe. Readers will feel God's great joy as the story of his creation is told in this fresh new picture book!" (Provided by publisher)

Blending the biblical narrative, science, and art, author and illustrator Andy McGuire portrays not only the majesty of God's creation, but also the beauty, delight, and love of the Creator for his handiwork. McGuire points to God who 'had an idea. He wanted there to be other things besides just himself.' And so God made the cosmos and all that dwells within it. McGuire masterfully narrates and illustrates the truth that 'nothing God made can live on its own--everything works together.' For example, McGuire writes, 'Birds need plants. Some parts they need to build their nests. And birds eat plant seeds. When birds eat them, they poop out some of the seeds, scattering them far and wide as they fly to distant lands. This helps plants spread to new places all around the world--part of God's plan.' McGuire's depiction of the creation of Adam and Eve is unique and authentic. In author notes, McGuire explains, 'Of course no one knows what Adam and Eve looked like, but I have given them skin color and features that defy easy categorization. Somehow Adam and Eve contained all the DNA of the human race, and they and their children were truly fruitful, spreading humanity to every corner of the globe.' Highly recommended to parents, caregivers, and teachers as a fresh, educational, and worshipful picture book to be savored again and again with young children. (The Banner)… (mere)

This was a very cute book. I loved that the author used rhyming, because it made the book more interesting and captured the readers attention. This book could be used as a writing model. The teacher could have the students write about a time when they lied and how it affected them. If the students have never lied or cannot remember a time they lied, the teacher could have the students write a what if essay about what they think would happen if they lied and how it would affect them.

NCLA Review - Andy McGuire’s latest book provides a fresh approach to teaching children that lies are amusing to us when we tell them, but hurtful to others. The story is told with whimsical rhymes and illustrated with animals that project genuine emotions. Eleanor hippo has a big mouth and fibs about other animals, nonstop, night and day. She was enjoying herself immensely and didn’t notice that she was being hurtful until she got into trouble for mocking a lion about being afraid of spiders. On trembling knees, Eleanor went to apologize, only to find that the lion’s eyes were red from crying. McGuire is the creator of Remy the Rino Learns Patience and A Special Fish for Jonah. My recommendation is to purchase all three for your church library. Ages 3-8. Rating: 4 —BJM… (mere)
