A relatively brief and concise treatise covering the history of sleeve valve aircraft engines in the US. This book is both an excellent quick dive into the history of a now relatively unknown engine type and the issues involved new product development and testing. What makes this volume unique and where it really comes to life is in the use of direct source archival material throughout the each chapter. This is not a work were a lazy author pieced a few sentences from various books to together to get something published. This is the book that will undoubtedly be mined by future authors as source material for the engines themselves and the aircraft they were proposed to power.
The book while being well illustrated with both photographs of the test articles and various performance charts does suffer from poor print quality in a few of the illustrations which make them bit more difficult to read. It does not detract from the overall quality of the book.
Because of the depth of the introduction and the willingness of the author to discuss British sleeve valve engines as needed for comparison, this book is and will be the last word on American sleeve valve engines
Not recommended for modelers.
Highly recommended for anyone interested in pre-war experimental aircraft engine development, or sleeve valves… (mere)
