Let me open by stating that I love the Dr. Hackenbush character. I have gleefully devoured every outing that Ms. Mayerson has permitted the good doctor to have. Each of the preceding stories was a delightful read and I recommend them whole heartily.

The issue of Storylandia at hand however, contains a different beast. The author has taken her usual cast of artists and rogues stirred twice and added in everything from murder to Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North. This is a very real urban mystery with just enough foreshadowing and a crushing conclusion.

Let us hope that Ms. Mayerson takes the final step and gives us a full length Hackenbush novel. She has the cast, the setting and the backstory. Given an interesting problem to solve I do believe it would fly out of the ballpark.

Storylandia Issue 8: Dr. Hackenbush Gets Some Culture

A fine novelette which contains many wondrous things which include in no reasoned order: hitherto unrelated facts regarding the good doctor herself, a finely presented and solved art theft mystery, and the socioeconomic intersection of a drug cartel, Latino and Vietnamese street gangs. This is a nexus that results in a truly appalling body count.

When you then throw in the ever more complicated relationship of Dr. Hackenbush and Eddie Lee, the fine gig at the newly renovated Lotus Room at the Hotel Watanabe in Little Tokyo, the shocking appearance of Ana Phalaxia and pour tequila over the top you will find in hand the third episode of the Hackenbush chronicles. A fine read and a continuing delight.

Review:

"The Good Wife of Cell Block D" by Ginger Mayerson was some serious read. From this read which is fiction but you are left to wonder does this really happen in our prisons. It left me thinking...Wow, not only is this a place to stay out or but really? You find that in some cases you only survive any means necessary which this person character was displayed as having two wife's...so is that why is was a good wife? I found this read rather sad and kept wondering why I chose to read it in the first place. It certainly wasn't the book cover! Oh, well if you are looking for what can happen to you in prison...then this would be a read for you. Did I like this novel? NO! It was far to deep for me to relate to. Would I recommend it? I would say its not for me, but it did seem as though this author knew what she was talking about...YOU THINK?… (mere)

This work is a novelle describing the adventures of Dr. Hackenbush. She is singer in a band in LA. Dr. Hackenbush gets involved in the local art scene, art theft and murder against a mexican-vietnamese background. The romantic adventures of Dr Hackenbush seem to be a red line in the series. A whole range of characters in the art and music scene enliven the story.

It is the first one in the series I read. References to previous happenings are referenced, but this novelle can be well read on its own. At first the story seemed to develop as a thriller. However that part of the story stayed a bit in the background as Dr Hackenbush did not get to much involved. Her dealings with would be lovers and competitors were more important.

All in all an enjoyable read.
