The first section in this book is called 'Instant Comforts'. And the first recipe in that section calls for pulling a few beets from the garden to boil, and then making fresh cheese from 2 liters of buffalo milk. Anyone who thinks of that as 'instant' lives a very different life from anyone I know.

In fact these recipes are all about how to take a meal and spend at least twice as long in the kitchen as you would normally for the special results. (Cheat and buy fresh pasta instead of making your own for a special spagetti bolognese!)

Now I'm sure many of these dishes do taste very good, but even when I feel like cooking up a storm, I still am basically interested in getting a meal on the table every night, rather than in proving how perfect a meal I can create.

This goes right back to the second hand book sale I bought it it.

This cookbook is creative, funny, impressive and completely yummy. The recipes are delivered by 30 top chiefs and the Heaven and Hell section gives a new meaning to food critic. I found each recipe to be easy to follow and the ingredients well presented. I also fell totally in love with the pictures through out each recipe showing the process from preparation to entree. I enjoyed the lively energy and true celebration of food that this multilevel delight brings with it and would recommend it to anyone who loves to make a statement in the kitchen. Awesome job, James.

There are a couple of recipes in here that look good...although several ingredients will require US substitutions. On the other hand, it is a fun souvenir from my mom's trip to the UK last spring...

A frank, detailed story of James' life from humble Yorkshire lad to a hot media "property", which involved much hard work, many of it with little or no pay. He also reveals his passion for cars, which has occasionally brought him close to the edge financially. A fascinating insight into this likeable TV chef and all-round personality.
