disappointed in how nonsensical most of it was. Wayyyyyy too long and of course all the action was in the last 100 pages. I loved seeing the ACOTAR world again but most of the book felt….out of character. For all characters. And I cringed a lot, which I never did with SJM. It felt like this Maasverse was played up a lot in her head but failed to deliver its emotional value through the writing/plot. A lot of the tropes are getting repetitive, I fear. The last 10 pages were pleasant. Overall, very mid.… (mere)

Throne of Glass, 4.3 Stars

In a land devoid of magic and ruled by a tyrannical king, Celaena Sardothien, a lethal assassin, is summoned to the castle not to assassinate, but to fight for her freedom. If she triumphs over twenty-three other killers, thieves, and warriors in a deadly competition, she will be released from prison to serve as the king's champion. Celaena must confront an evil lurking within the castle's glass walls, one that begins to murder her competitors. Her quest for freedom soon turns into a fight for survival and a mission to uncover the evil threatening to destroy her world.

Having read Sarah J. Maas’s ACOTAR series, I approached Throne of Glass with a mix of anticipation, intimidation, and skepticism. While I enjoyed the world-building and characters in ACOTAR, some of the explicit romance scenes were not to my taste. Throne of Glass, however, pleasantly surprised me by focusing more on the plot and fantasy elements (not intimidating), which I personally prefer.

This first book is basically a set up for the series. It’s reminiscent of some of my favorite YA fantasy’s, such as Powerless, Red Queen, The Remnant Chronicles, and Dance of Thieves.

Celaena Sardothien is a complex FMC—both deadly and extremely girlish. At times, her character felt a bit inconsistent, like I was questioning, whether or not she was really an assassin because she came across so girly it didn’t seem to fit the image of an assassin, but as the series progresses (I already started book 2), her depth and development become more apparent. The dynamic between Celaena, Crown Prince Dorian, and Captain of the Guard Chaol provides a delightful dance of loyalty, friendship, and romance, without overshadowing the plot.

I loved Dorian’s character. ❤️ His gentle nature and desire to rule differently from his tyrannical father, his love for books and his gift of Fleetfoot to Celaena won me over completely! 🥰🥰🥰

Chaol, on the other hand, is more stoic and loyal to a fault. Like, Celaena, there were times when his character was a little difficult for me to believe. For example, when he made his first kill, he was so distraught which seems surprising that as a captain of the royal guard, his first kill would be happening now and I’m not prior to receiving the position.
On the other hand, I do think his actions during the final duel reveal layers to his character that I have a feeling will be turning point in his relationship with Celaena.

The competition itself, with its life-or-death stakes, adds a layer of suspense and intrigue that kept me hooked. The mysterious evil within the castle and the slowly unraveling backstory of Celaena’s past was so great. I love how Maas leaves little nuggets/clues to keep the reader guessing! I can see how fans rave about her books!

Overall, Throne of Glass is an intriguing start to what promises to be a refreshing fantasy that balances action and intrigue with just the right touch of romance!

✔️strong world-building
✔️engaging plot
✔️well-developed characters

I genuinely liked this one more than the first. I’m not like obsessed with it, but it’s just very easy to read and digest? Like, the world building is fairly simple and the storyline is pretty straightforward. Although I’m ngl, I kinda dislike the fact that the slowburn between rhys and Feyre is already over. The thing I loved most about them was like the flirting and playing games and not admitting things, just in general the tension between them? And I think it’s rlly gonna bum me out im the next books that their tension is already over. Since I’m not that interested in the relationships of the others fksndidndkd. Anyway, an enjoyable read, don’t regret reading it on recommendation of my friends.… (mere)
