What a wonderful story! In this bilingual picture book, Jose Lozano tells the story of Lily "Little Chanclas" Lujan. She's called Little Chanclas because she wears her old flip flops everywhere she goes- well up until she loses one in Mrs. Carachure's guacamole bowl and Chewco the bulldog eats the other up! This book has mind provoking unique illustrations. My favorite one being poor Chewco the bulldog sick with an ice pack on his head and a thermometer in his mouth after feeling woozy, post chancla incident. The writing is engaging and witty- an example is when Lily was distraught after losing her chanclas and after her family had tried finding her more shoes, one cousin referred to her as "Cinderella's bratty sister". The big idea of this story is dealing with loss, however small. Towards the end Lily finds love in other shoes, it's a great story.… (mere)

I like this book for a couple of reasons. First. I like this book because it uses a lot of alliterations and onomatopoeia to enhance the story. The author describes Lily’s chanclas as flip flops that were “slippity-slappetying” and “flippty-flopped” when she walked. Also, when Granny Lola came to give Lily new chanclas, she knocked on the door and the author wrote, “Bang! Bang! Bang!” I also like this book because it is bilingual. The author wrote the story in both English and Spanish. Each page has the words written in English on one side of the page and Spanish on the other. For example, when Lily’s granny knocks on the door she says, “Open up!” and in Spanish she says “Abran la puerta!” The overall message of this book is not be afraid to try new things. Lily was so upset when her little chanclas broke that she wouldn’t wear any other shoes. When her Granny brought her new chanclas she was happy and eventually she learned to like wearing other shoes. Lily “wore elegant, sporty, colorful high-heeled shoes and even leather moccasins.” She learned that it was okay to try something new and she learned to wear different shoes.… (mere)

I really liked this book because of it's engaging and bright pictures and because of it's ability to relate with the reader. This book is about a girl who is attached to her sandals and won't accept any other pair of shoes except the loud and old ones that she owns. This is relate able to almost anyone because almost every one has at least one object that they keep despite its condition and usefulness. This may include old blankets ("woobies") or old toys that you cannot seem to throw away from your childhood. The illustrations in this book were also very fun and had a lot of movement to them. They were very creative and busy, but they were evened out by having the the words separated with a plain background so that the pictures didn't overwhelm and take away from the words.… (mere)
