Jill Lowe (1937–2004)

Jill Lowe was the daughter of British tennis star Arthur Lowe, and the granddaughter of Conservative Member of Parliament Francis Lowe. She was educated in Surrey and in Italy before returning home to England. In 1957, she married Peter Gibbons, a barrister, and the couple had five children. When the marriage ended after 17 years and her inheritance was lost through bankruptcy, Jill went to work as a guide for the British Museum. On her first trip to India in 1989, she met Lal Singh Yadav, a taxi driver ten years her junior, in Delhi. He was a widower and a peasant farmer from Rajasthan. In 1993, the couple were married. They lived in a mud-floored farmhouse without electricity, surrounded by Yadav's relatives. She wrote a memoir entitled Yadav: A Roadside Love Story, published in 2003.
