this book was way more interesting and informative than it had any right to be. Who knew groceries were at the center of such dark stories. The author did his research on so many aspects f the grocery business, it's amazing. there is a somewhat funny rags to riches story about how Trader Joes came to be to hook you at the beginning, then information on what life is like for truckers, animals being processed for eventual consumption and even modern day slaves, imprisoned so we can have cheap shrimp. I read it because it was on a list of Mary Roache reccommendations for best "true crime" books ,but the real crime would've been passing up on this gem… (mere)

Both amazing and depressing. The things people do that drive our system, and the system that drives people to do the things they do.

The beginning of this book really grabbed me, so interesting to hear of the start of Trader Joes. After that it went downhill for me.

This covers so much, but there were so many things that weren’t even touched on. I guess that makes sense since groceries is a pretty all encompassing topic. What this boils down to is no ethical consumption under capitalism, and you can only know the morality of your food if you grow it yourself. The trucking industry is a nightmare, but nothing compared to the slave boats that are harvesting shrimp. Nothing mentioned about food waste, food deserts, or immigrants in our own country that we depend on.… (mere)
