1764 : the hurlyburly of daily life exemplified in… af Jack Lindsay
Fascinating way to learn history from the news of the 1764.
Per un verso, questo è un saggio solido, che illustra l'espansione normanna prima in Francia, poi in Inghilterra e Italia meridionale (quest'ultima in modo più succinto), e analizza con molti dettagli la società normanna, quella anglosassone pre-invasione e l'impatto della cultura normanna su di essa, per finire con alcune considerazioni generali. Per un altro verso, il testo tende a insistere un po' troppo sui dettagli (fin troppi per il profano) senza preoccuparsi troppo del quadro generale (o forse lo dà per noto), e la traduzione non sembra ben fatta. Di conseguenza l'esposizione risulta spesso dispersiva, poco chiara e confusa, e dunque la lettura è faticosa e poco produttiva.… (mere)
This book, Julius Caesar and Nero in the Rulers of the Ancient World set from Folio are all dull, and written at a level that redefines redundancy. The books themselves I have no problem with. Folio Society, on the other hand, should never have chosen these three (Alex the Great and Hannibal are quite good) to compose a set of introductory biographies of the era. Sorry Folio Society but you missed the boat on this one.
It's too bad Lindsay isn't more well known. A prolific writer with an excellent study of Charles Dickens.
