I liked this book for three reasons. First, the language is engaging and descriptive. When discussing the ringneck snake, it says, “A tiny ringneck snake twists and squirms as it sheds its old skin. First the snake rubs against a rock until the old skin across its snout splits open.” The author went into detail about how the snake sheds its old skin, allowing readers to easily visualize this process in their heads. Second, the writing is organized. Each page has a different reptile, which is clearly stated in a bold header. After reading the header of “Cottonmouths and copperheads,” I knew that I would be reading only about those two snakes. This made the book more comprehendible. The last reason I liked this book was because the illustrations enhance the story. After reading about a reptile, I was able to see a lively illustration of what it looks like. Majority of the reptiles, like the hognose snake, I have never heard of. So, being able to read about the hognose snake then see what it looks like helped me understand the reptile more effectively. The big idea of this book is that there are numerous types of reptiles in the world that have many similarities and differences. It is important to be aware of the different reptiles to expand one’s knowledge and ability to identify the various characteristics of reptiles.… (mere)

Fantastic. Teaches that dinosaurs are the ancestors of birds, not lizards, and that some of the adults cared for their young, and that some were smaller than children. And shows Apatosaurus (*not* brontosaurus) supporting it's own weight (*not* in a swamp).
