This starts off pretty goofy, but tensions build, and build, and while there's humor throughout, that tension stays until the author totally and absolutely sticks the landing, right to the last word.

I have rarely read a more beautifully-written story, in any genre. The friends are fans of a SF TV show, (like 90% of my friends), and attend a series of fan cons devoted to it, and read fanfic shipping the characters, and if I've lost you with that, don't worry. It's explained, and it's funny. The plot is nicely complex, and I loved the main characters even when they were being idiots.

Really, I would like to add a bonus star for that ending. Just beautiful.

This story is outstanding! I enjoyed #1 a lot, and this one is even better. The tension throughout is perfect, including Barrie's patented self-inflicted kind, and the conflict is brilliant. Read it!

Our point-of-view character Levon has anxiety as well as a low-level superpower. His boyfriend Jay is the same level super as him. Jay's naturally kindhearted, but, as Lee fears, is destined for bigger things.

That sounds relatively simple, but Lillis's prose and worldbuilding makes this novel sing. She made me love a narrative structure I usually dislike, weaving current and past chapters into a meaning-filled whole so rich in details that I feel like I was there with them. All the characters are great, animals included. I'll warn you, it ends bittersweetly. But there will absolutely be another book, it says so in the title of the afterword! I will be the first in line to pre-order!

I was given an ARC, this review is my honest reaction to the work: READ IT as soon as you can!

This is the kind of story where I can see why other people would love this. I on the other hand got bored, frustrated, annoyed and giggly. Not a story for me.

The writing felt... off. I don't know how to described it. But I did not enjoy it.

I got really annoyed with the characters. The side characters were super vague and random. The main characters at least felt authentic. Not that I liked them though. Teenagers are a pain. Even when I was a teenager I recognized (sometimes) how annoying I was. But at least I got to know them. And I don't think you should always like the main character to enjoy the story.

The religion part was, at least to me, the whole point of the story and I did not like it. I'm not a religious person. Did grew up in it though. Multiple ones. But I never got the whole 'people must suffer' side in some of the religions. You've got one life. Live it. Try to do no harm to others and the planet and in my eyes you're good to go. To me it doesn't matter if there is an afterlife or not. Which made this book so frustrating because of the 'but we are thinking about you soul!'-thinking from the side characters. But even from Abel (who's not religious) that kind of attitude just annoys me.

It's an open end and I didn't mind that. It felt fitting.

I will not read the second book in the series. I really didn't like the writing enough for that.
