A pleasant surprise. I didn't expect anything from this book. It was given to me by my mother-in-law and I really wasn't interested in reading it (hence it sat on my bookshelf for 3 years). Nothing else to read, I gave it a go, got hooked and enjoyed the story. Nicely written, great characters, flavours of India and a bit of history. Would recommend if looking for a light read with some comedy and drama.
The story of life in Chalaii, an Indian hill station,and it's quirky inhabitants. Very funny with some well penned characters. The episode of the car being stuck in reverse gave me a really good chuckle.
A romp through the life and loves in a small town in India in the 1930's.
Lydia marries William and goes to live with him in Chalili, a fictional town near Bombay. Here we meet Mrs Banjeree who opens a cinema and hides her secret past as well as William' s servant Anil and Mrs Banjeree's servant Aruna.
Lydia struggles with life in the town, feeling the scorn from the English women and turns to gin and the friendship of the servants for comfort.
The book is funny at times and the characters are well drawn. We follow these main characters but are also introduced to a host of secondary characters who create a vivid picture of town life especially during monsoon time.
The descriptions of India and especially Bombay are well written, the colours, smells, poverty are striking. The book feels quite long at nearly 500 pages, 100 pages or so less would have been good. However, it was a good read and I enjoyed being transported to India in the 1930's.… (mere)
