New Holmes/Russell Book Coming! i Baker Street and Beyond (november 2012)

A disappointing read compared to the more gripping and psychologically astute The Beekeeper's Apprentice (the first in this series) and the far superior (alternate) historical novel Cahokia Jazz by Francis Spufford, the book I read just before. In Mary, the plotting is loose, the red herrings belabored, the ultimate solution tawdry; and the most interesting element in the book, the one most likely to attract the interest of those not already invested in the series, turns out to be a mere distraction, a dangling bauble constructed to emphasize and underscore a theme already well developed in the book's other elements and plot points. I would recommend this only to Holmes fanfic completists and to those whose chief pleasure in reading mysteries is in solving their puzzles.… (mere)

4.5 stars, I loved this episode of Mary Russell and Sherlock. The characters are lively and the story is heartbreaking and makes you care deeply about the resolution. I wouldn't say there was much Sherlockian detecting going on, but it was still a good time.

3.5, not better than previous books but still an immersive story with rich characters and culture and danger for our characters. I like how Holmes respects Russell as a whole person capable of everything he is.

This is my favorite in the series so far, revisiting an original Sherlock case decades after. I love these versions of the characters, likely because we spend so little time with this Sherlock and most of it with Mary that the differences between him and the original are not grating.
