Daniel Kehlmann, Benjamin Markovits Daniel Kehlmann; Benjamin MarkovitsPart wunderkind and part enfant terrible, Kehlmann completed his first novel while still a student, and rose to worldwide fame in 2005 with the publication of Measuring the World, a historical novel based on the lives of the explorer and naturalist Alexander von Humboldt and the scientist Carl Gauss. His latest book is Fame: A Novel in Nine Episodes (Quercus), a sequence of stories investigating the transience of identity in our technologised present. Benjamin Markovits grew up in Texas, London and Berlin. His novels include The Syme Papers, Imposture and A Quiet Adjustment (Faber) – the last two part of a projected trilogy inspired by the life of Lord Byron. Kehlmann and Markovits share interests in their work biography, genius and failure, charisma and the question of how to give voice to real historical figures but have differences too; both make fuel for a very interesting conversation. Daniel Kehlmann Daniel KehlmannDaniel Kehlmann's best-selling fifth novel Measuring the World depicts the encounter of mathematical genius Carl Friedrich Gauss and the legendary explorer Alexander von Humboldt, both of whom made scientific discoveries which changed the world. Kehlmann depicts these two Enlightenment heroes warts and all - vain, obsessive, quarrelsome and mortal. But the consuming fascination of ideas comes alive in Kehlmann's witty and ironic tale, the biggest selling novel in Germany in the last 20 years, which has been translated into 29 languages and hailed as a masterpiece. His comic novel Me and Kaminsky takes on the art world. Conceited, and lazy but ambitious Sebastian Zollner is anxious to make his name by writing the biography of Kaminski, a great modern artist. Kehlmann takes a swing at celebrity, fame and self-interest in what has been described as a "steely comedy". Daniel Kehlmann is the author of eight novels, and is a leading figure in contemporary German fiction. He will be in conversation with Brigitte Bonisch-Brednich. Making History Simon Schama; Daniel Kehlmann; Margo LanaganWriting about history takes many forms, some fictional, some fact, and many somewhere in between. Simon Schama is an historian whose hugely imaginative narratives have won him legions of fans, whether he is talking about A History of Britain or The American Future. Daniel Kehlmann's epic novel about the explorer Alexander von Humboldt, and the mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, is a fictional account of the very different worlds of two real Enlightenment thinkers. In Margo Lanagan's bitter folktale Tender Morsels the writer creates a future for her characters by imagining a past. All of these writers are storytellers and each has a unique way of engaging with the historical. Join these writers in conversation with Lydia Wevers as they talk about the relationship between narrative and history. Together they discuss the ways writing the future can be a form of history, and discover if writing about the past is, in some ways, a fiction.
