Arnie Kantrowitz’s posthumously published novel, Song of Myself is, perhaps, more a testimony of the activism and life of its author than of the life of Daniel Blake, the protagonist of the fictional autobiography.
The novel explores the life of its protagonist, since his teenage years all to his life as an old man - including potential outcomes for it. The timeline goes from a period before “proper” gay activism, to the nascent movement, to WWII, the AIDS epidemic and its aftermath. And while Daniel is not the main historical figure in all of these events, he is present in all of them, providing a point of view for Kantrowitz’s take on these matters.
While the writing is serviceable and clear, at times it gets too didactic, undermining the overall effect. That does not mean the novel is without its charm, but it does not have the feel of a finished product. Instead, is serves to bookend the life, activism, and work of Kantrowitz, from the early 1970’s until his death in 2022. As such, it reminds us that the persistence of memory and history is an ongoing enterprise, and a collective effort.

Song of Myself is an interesting look at a possible gay experience of life. One assumes there is truth in it for it to sound as authentic as it does. The author includes sexual episodes without being graphic or erotic (if you're looking for that, don't look here). A good read for someone curious about what a gay lifestyle might mean.

The author has written such an honest memoir style book that it astounded me. It is about the life and strugglesof a gay man who travels acrossthe country in an effort to find love and understand his place in the world. He expresses his affinity to Walt Whitman and allows the dead writer to guide him. This is a poignant story filled with heartbreak, compassion and the central character's longing to be part of a culture that just keeps offering only confusion, rejection and physical battering. It is Daniel Dell Blake's persistence to bring kindness with him to each encounter that is the key to understanding his ultimately successful journey.… (mere)
