Pretty entertaining, fairly informative. It's not presented as a scholarly work, and it's not: you get a good overview of ads through the past few decades, many of which have some stills to illustrate the imagery. The first few chapters each focus on a decade, then the book shifts to showcase ads by theme or advertised product. Some context and explanation is given (e.g. $X money spent, reception, why this ad), but it's unevenly provided.

This was an interesting time-capsule of a) life in mid-90s America and b) poor use of survey results in popular media. Cite your surveys, people! And don't use ones that were done by corporate interests trying to promote something with crappy science!

This book is somewhat interesting, however it is rather difficult to read. It shows what proportion of people have done an activity or agree/disagree with a statement, but sometimes this is expressed as a fraction, or a percentage (sometimes written out, sometimes as a number). This wouldn't be a problem if they were at least the same for each topic, but they are mixed.

An example of what I'm talking about (not specifically from the book):
1/5 of those surveyed have done x and enjoyed it, fourteen percent have done x and didn't enjoy it, and 45% want to try x, but haven't.

Now quick: how many people haven't tried x and don't want to?

For me, this takes away a lot of the enjoyment from reading the book.
