This book gave me Stephen King vibes with the group of young friends setting out to solve a mystery involving a paranormal aspect. Johnston's writing style was unique and engaging, though. I never once lost interest in this story, and I've been thinking about it since I finished it. It was easy to picture everything going on as if I were there with the group.
I adored the main group - Jermaine (JP), Pudgy, Duncan, Lenny, and Bernie. They were all relatable, so it was easy to connect with them. Their antics were humorous, even during the more intense scenes toward the end. I loved getting to know each of them, watching them grow as characters and friends.
I really loved Guylaine, as well. Her character was extremely important, something that was made obvious from the second she was introduced. She was such an interesting character, and I think it would've been nice to have gotten a little more background information on her.
I'm a fairly emotional person, especially when it comes to books, but this is the first book that's made me full on sob this year - not just tear up, but loud-enough-to-wake-my-dad-up sob. And my dad can sleep through a tornado with zero problem.
If you're a Stephen King fan, especially of It and Stand by Me, you'll love this book. This is a must read thriller for everyone!
