Job’s lie is the heart of Mr. and Mrs. Doctor. He wants to be respectable and respected. Ifi wants to be able to say that her marriage wasn’t a mistake. And the cascade of events provoked by keeping up appearances endangers their family’s already precarious circumstances, undercutting them with every bluster and misdirection. Mr. and Mrs. Doctor is a sprawling, messy, morally complex tale and a tragedy in the classical sense.
Julie Iromuanya earned her PhD from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and was the inaugural Herbert W. Martin Post-Graduate Fellow at the University of Dayton.
