Urban Legends is set in small college, where students attending Professor Steven's writing classes, currently working on writing horror stories using ideas derived from murders which have found their way into modern-day folklore, come across a series of murders bearing close resemblance to murders discussed in class.

The various murder methods have been thoroughly researched and used to good effect in this story, and had me wondering who would do such a thing? It is obviously the work of a writer because he is noting what he can see, and how the murder makes him feel as he executes it - pun intended! However, as all the students are aspiring writers, and the professor is also a published author, there are lots of suspects for the completely inept detectives assigned to the cases to filter.

I thought the plot worked, and that it was an entertaining and not-too-scary read, with a few red herrings to keep the reader off balance. For me though, I would have liked to have known more about the killer's motivations beyond 'research', and understood any satisfaction derived from the killings, something which I think would have added to the tension in this story.

When fourteen year old Franco Carey dies tragically in a road accident, his thirteen year old sister, Loren, takes the view that his death is the fault of their younger sister, Kina.

The story is told in the first person from Loren's point of view. Loren believes she is being directed to kill Kina by Franco's ghost in order that he can rest in peace. We learn about Loren's insecurities and hear her reasoning for her assumptions and actions. It's actually rather chilling to read about Loren's hatred of Kina and their mother.

As I read, I definitely felt I was inside the mind of a troubled teen, understanding her rationale, yet being appalled by it. The language and thought processes feel very much like those of a young teen. I guessed there was more to Loren's hostility towards her younger sister than we were being told. But when Loren's class mate Maria Clinton becomes the focus of her hatred, and Loren's actions result in the girl ending up in hospital, I feared it was all going to end in a bloodbath.

I found Perfect Little Murder to be enthralling, and I would highly recommend it to readers who enjoy a dark and twisted tale.

Perfect Little Murder is, in my opinion, Hosby's best work to date.

Six Plus One is the sequel to One By One which I read recently.

Six friends go to an out of the way campsite to make a film about aliens. They are from the town of Voy, where last year there was a brutal slaying of a group of friends at an isolated cabin. One of the group, Alta, is the daughter of the detective who caught the case. She is with her boyfriend, Kendrick, his brother Eugene, Eugene's girl friend, Natalie, the sound recordist for the team, Declan and Alta's best friend Johanna. The only other person on site is Grayson, the camp counsellor who had agreed to stay and help the film crew after the camp had closed for the season.

It was only a matter of time before the bodies started to drop, and with no way to contact the outside world, the group is at the mercy of the killer.

I enjoyed Six Plus One . It held my attention and had me guessing at the killer's identity from the first death. With each death I changed my mind, but kept going back to my first thought. What shocked me most was the killer's motive for all the killings, and how meticulously it had all been planned in advance.

A gripping short story that will keep you up at night!

Horror and psychological thrillers take me out of my reading comfort zone, but One by One is the debut story from Hosby, an author I have come to enjoy reading. While I don't think it is her best work, as a debut novel it shows real promise.

This is the story of a group of friends who are heading to the beach for a few days, but stopping off at a cabin in the woods, so that Kenan and Rae can sign it over to the new owner, an individual called RL.

We are told that Kenan and Rae's parents were murdered at the cabin some ten years earlier, and that Kenan witnessed the brutal rape of both Rae and their mother on that same terrible night. Rae understandably has haunting memories, and hasn't been back to the cabin since. She is reluctantly going now, but only to sign the papers of sale, and then leave the past behind and head off to the beach.

There are eight friends, and one of the girls has brought along a man she met three hours ago, Adam. They travel to the cabin in two jeeps only to find that RL has rearranged the meeting which forces the group to stay in the cabin overnight.

As the title suggests, the group are dispatched one by one. But who is doing the killing? The friends all point their fingers at Adam as nobody knows anything about him, or perhaps RL has lured them to the cabin for his own sport.

I found the beginning a bit slow as the group seemed to be winding themselves up in anticipation of the creepiness of the cabin, and talked about what might happen, long before there was any hint of things going bad. However, the pace picked up once the bodies started dropping.

There are a lot of characters to keep track of, as well as their various friendships groups, and while I was thinking about their petty jealousies and hook ups, I failed to identify those responsible for the terrible slaughter or see the twist in the tale coming until it was revealed in the story.

The sequel to this is Six Plus One which I have just started, and am already enjoying.
