Written in 1882, this was a difficult read. There were no maps provided and with the narrative it was difficult to follow the action. This was increased by the authors style of writing. The use of many conpound sentences, numbers written out and complex words (many not commonly used today) forced a dictionary to be a companion to the book. The true value in the book is that it is written by an eye witness (Chaplain of the Army of Cumberland) shortly after the war with the liberal use of the Official Record of the war and the input and verification from many of the participants.… (mere)
