2513 More Roman Than Rome / English Catholicism in the Nineteenth Century, by J. Derek Holmes (read 20 Jun 1993) This 1978 book has a chapter on Catholic Emancipation in England and then these chapters: Wiseman and the Roman Restoration; Newman and the failure of Liberal Catholicism; Manning and the establishment of Ultramontanism; Vaughan and the rise of Triumphalism; and Prospect and retrospect--An English Spring? The book trods familiar territory. It is kind of painful, at least as Holmes puts it, since he favors Newman and the liberal Catholics and the treatment of Newman was often inconsiderate, though one thanks God for Leo XIII raising him to Cardinal in 1879. Holmes paints Vaughn in a pretty unfavorable light--which (of course) is not how his biographer Snead-Cox painted him. This book was well worth reading, though it got into some things having less interest to a non-Englishman. But English Catholic history interests me very much.… (mere)
