It was lovely to see these characters again and even more lovely to visit Cleveland again through the eyes and ears of author [a: Annie Hogsett|15594410|Annie Hogsett|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1496588352p2/15594410.jpg]. Indeed, one can argue that Cleveland is the n-th character of the novel.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Perhaps not as much as her first ([b:Too Lucky to Live|34078713|Too Lucky to Live|Annie Hogsett|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1486726673s/34078713.jpg|55089533]), but still quite worth the time.

The short chapters lend themselves to making this a quick read. As does the writing style.

One thing that slowed it down for me at times was the dialog. There were occasionally long sections of dialog when a character finishes a paragraph and then continues on with a new paragraph. The omission of the last double-quotes was a fairly reliable clue that we stayed with the same speaker, but it wasn't always enough of a visual indicator and I frequently found myself wondering who was speaking.

Thank you, [a: Annie Hogsett|15594410|Annie Hogsett|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1496588352p2/15594410.jpg]!

THE DEVIL'S OWN GAME, by Annie Hogsett, is a playful mystery about Allie Harper and Tom Bennington (they form the detective agency T&A) being thrust into their next case by a murder at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Tom is blind, Allie is spunky, and together with their master of security, Otis, start to piece together the murderer and his possible motives, meanwhile the deaths start to pile up and Allie starts to wonder if they will solve the case before they all get added to the death toll.
There is a lot going in this book. Tom won a major lottery a couple of years ago and now money is not an issue in his life or in the detective business. Allie and Tom have been a couple since the lottery windfall. There are journalists, police officers, and socialites that flow in and out of the book. The previous books mystery are often referenced but without reading them first, the reader finds it hard not to feel a little lost. All of this can leave the reader's head spinning without even looking at the crux of the book, the mystery at hand. The plot itself is interesting and keeps the reader on their toes for the next revelation. I did find myself wanting more story and less sidetracking throughout the book. The story does wrap up nicely and the reader feels rewarded with a satisfying conclusion.
THE DEVIL'S OWN GAME plot is an entertaining mystery and compels the reader to keep reading to find out who did it. There are a lot of inside references that are easily lost and therefore seem to get in the way of the story, but that being said, I enjoyed reading this book.
Thank you to Poisoned Pen Press, Anne Hogsett, and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

I was looking for a lIght, fun and fast read and this fit the bill. The wildcap hijinks are clever by half and the perils of sudden fortune a good premise.

Allie Harper very quickly tells us, "I have always felt that with some training, I'd make an excellent P.I. A cross between V.I. Warshawski and Kinsey Millhone, with a dash of Stephanie Plum, Bounty Hunter, thrown in for insouciance." In Too Lucky to Live, I saw a lot of Stephanie Plum and not much at all of Millhone and Warshawski. Rune, the poor kid Tom was trying to teach a lesson, was my favorite character, but there wasn't enough of him. I have to be honest and say that I understand why. With killers and kidnappers behind every door, giving Rune a more substantial part would call for putting a child in a lot of danger, and I don't care for that at all.

Too Lucky to Live is a light, quick, fun read which is well-suited to fans of mysteries like Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum.
