"Flash Crash" is an entertaining gold heist and you if you like heist stories you will like it. You mustn't worry about believing all of it though.

David Belov is a computer guy at Montgomery Noyes, a huge stock trading company. He is a smart guy, a guy who pulled himself up out of Brooklyn by being a math whiz. He learned computers and now is one of the trading analysts at Montgomery Noye, chugging along in a less glamorous but well-paid career supporting the traders. Then the unthinkable happens. David's wife and son are kidnapped and to ransom them David must provide the software hack that crashes the world gold market leaving Montgomery Noyes open to a successful gold heist. David, mortified at what he has been forced to do, enlists the help of his childhood friend, the gangster Vlad Zhadanov, to find and protect his family. The gold is stolen then lost then stolen again in a complex and cleverly written plot.

This is the first book in a series about Detective Jake Rivett and it is surprising how little we learn about him. Jake isn't the focus of the story. He ghosts in and out, generally being a jerk, and we learn little of his thought process and motivation. We do learn that he is tolerated on the police force only because he so successful at solving crimes. His methods, though, are brutal and outlandish and it is hard to imagine that any police force could overlook them. If this were not a series I would not be surprised at this treatment because there has to be a detective in a heist story. But as this is a series, I wonder if Mr. Hatch will let us get to know Rivett any better in the future or will this minimalist approach (and Rivett's implausible behavior) continue.

On a technical note, I am not sure that Mr. Hatch has calculated the weight of all that gold consistently. Late in the book we are told that each bar weighs 8 pounds and that the current troy-ounce spot price is $1165 so each bar is worth $116,000. One short ton = 1.66 cubic feet (each side about your two hands thumb to thumb) and so there are just over 333 bars per ton. You can find gold weight to volume converters online and do all the calculations yourself as to how many bars there are total and how much the weight or volume is each time the gold moves or is stacked in a particular space. At a couple of points in the story people are slinging gold bars around pretty easily. A few gold bars maybe, but not many gold bars.

I received a review copy of "Flash Crash" by Denison Hatch (Lookout) through NetGalley.com.
