Wolfwalker af Tara K. Harper

was going to give it 4 stars -- interesting characters, unusual and (as far as i can tell) consistent world building. then, i get to the end and discover the story's problems continue into more books: the first book does not tell you it's part of a series, so you expect it to have a satisfying ending.

and then, it doesn't. hallmarks of "architect of sleep" and "hyperion".

WOLFWALKER af Tara K. Harper

IMO, this thing falls apart in the last 100 pages. Dion's "miraculous" discovery seems pretty unlikely given the amount of time that has passed; surely some wolfwalker could have thought of this before? While Harper mentions that the wolfwalkers are rare, I don't get the impression that they are stupid.

I admit I didn't give this book much of a chance, deciding to stop around page 70. All the characters seemed to be the same person with different names and just blended in with each other. It was also somewhat aggravating that all these new creatures were being named, with little to no description of what they actually looked like. Dnu are the most commonly mentioned animal as they are the horses of this world, but all I know is they have six legs and a hairy tail.

This is one I may just be in the wrong mood for. It'll go back on my shelf for a later attempt.… (mere)

Lightwing af Tara K. Harper

Good enough, but pretty straightforward - iow, just another spec. fic. adventure. Rec. for fans of telepathy I guess. The aliens were interesting, but not sufficiently plausible/ exotic/ carefully-drawn for me.
