By the end I just didn't care. Blake and Kay have lost everything and are now in the Wilderness where their lives are in a different kind of danger. They find the resistance, who are young and want to fight the status quo, but the cost is going to be high and the effort is going to be huge.

There may be more books in this series I might read them but I really don't care.

This gets lots of plusses for the world created. Jackson is on top of the world, looking down on others and will be a leader in his society once he's finished his schooling, but all is not as it seems, and one day he no longer exists in his world but in the underclass, a place where he's no longer protected, where he's drugged and has to fight for his place in the school and he has issues with it all, and little does he know what's going to happen next.

You can see how the author was thinking about current educational trends and the haves and have nots in society becoming more demarcated and how this all is plausible, except Jackson. Jackson sometimes just seemed too perfect. Until he arrived no-one seemed to try like he did, no-one questioned the system and I have difficulties with that.… (mere)

The beginning of The Disappeared is chilling. Jackson's whole life is turned upside down in minutes, as people he's known forever stare at him blankly and swear they've never met him. And Jackson's reaction is so understandable: he races about his school, looking in his bedroom, at his desk, trying to find some way to prove he is who he says he is. But of course, that's the whole point: he's trusted the adults around him his whole life, and is only now discovering that they have thrown him to the wolves.

However, while the plot as a whole was full of twisty-turny reveals and heart-pounding action sequences, I have to say, my favorite bits were the quieter scenes, the big questions, the heart, and the LANGUAGE. See, even though the kids of the Academy have been denied a proper education and any cultural access, and are treated more like animals than humans, they're not dumb. And the way they use language, stringing together simple words to form complex thoughts, is so clever.

The Disappeared is such a rich, immersive experience, in a chilling, yet totally believable dystopian future.

In Short
- The action starts pretty much from the first chapter.
- There are constantly new twists with lots of action and character building.
- Harper really pushes some boundaries in this book.
- I disliked how Jackson felt a lot younger than he was.

In Long
I haven’t read much dystopia lately and The Disappeared appealed to me so I decided to give it a go! Any doubts were straight away put to the side. I haven’t read a book in ages which gets into the storyline as quickly at The Disappeared. Pretty much within the first chapter the action started and I was able to get into the storyline.
The action didn't slow down throughout the whole book. There were constantly new twists, lots of actions and character building. I was totally wrapped up in this whole new world which Harper had created. I felt throughout the whole book that Harper really had created a new world which is shocking yet was able to feel so real to me. So often I read books I just can’t believe because they are too far-fetched.

It was so refreshing that Harper really pushed some boundaries in this book. Some parts are really violent and which made me a little uncomfortable as the people involved in the violence were the characters I had gained a bond with. I guess for some people this will be a negative but for me it added to the book in a strange but good way.

There’s not much you can dislike about this book. The only thing which I struggled with was the age of the characters. Jackson is 17 but throughout the whole book I struggled with this, I just felt he didn't act like he was 17. He was so strange about things like physical contact with girls when I think most 17 years old are past that stage. Apart from that I can’t actually explain why i just couldn't view him as this 17 year old but the whole book felt less mature than I would have liked.

Final Thoughts
The Disappeared is a real page turner which will engulf you into a new world you would never have considered before but becomes the only world you know.
