This is enjoyable, over-the-top, scifi.
At times it seems like a blend of Indiana Jones and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with a beginners 101 course in historical Chinese philosophy thrown in. But the result is, mostly, a fun ride.
I often feel that scifi tells you less about aliens and possible scientific futures, and more about the lives and domestic concerns of the author. Just as John Wyndham's sci-fi reflected post-WW2 social ills, this book gives an insight into Chinese attitudes to the role and status of their country as China re-emerges as a major power.… (mere)

My Review: Interesting mash-up of Doctor Who and the holographic universe interpretation of quantum physics. I was less sold on this story than I was on Vagabonds a couple years ago. Part of that is down to the personalities of the main characters, as I am bored by straight people competing over sex. Another part was the politics of the Earth conflict...why the hell does an omniscient, all-but-omnipotent force...whether alien or divine...allow the injustice and horror of the world as it is?

There is no answer to that question that convinces me of the existence of such beings. So a big part of my reading energy goes into fighting off the sense that this story is founded on sand, and it is shifting rapidly under my readerly feet.

Not everyone will feel this way, so the folks who liked Contact, Arrival, or the Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson will be gruntled by this read. Vagabonds readers will likely miss the more ornamented prose in that book, but the pleasures of characters developing, seeking, and solving problems will make up for it.

Non tutti i racconti funzionano bene come il primo (che a ragione dà titolo alla raccolta), che riesce a unire un brillante spunto fantascientifico a una lettura critica di una società classista, controllata e separata in cui è facile rivedere la Cina odierna (e forse non solo). In alcuni casi la critica emerge più forte della fantascienza, che resta "di maniera"; in altri la fantascienza prende il sopravvento e la lettura sociale non risulta più così chiara e incisiva. A ogni modo, autrice da conoscere per avere un'idea della letteratura cinese contemporanea (e provare a capire la società cinese in generale).… (mere)

Excellent read that in my opinion falls more under literary fiction than science fiction, reminds me a bit of one of Kim Stanley Robinson's books. I have only two criticisms, one it was very lengthy and I honestly believed the story could still have been done well if only they cut out a third of the book. It was divided into 3 parts and was lengthy in the introspective parts. If it was cut down to two parts it would have been easier to follow and more enjoyable. Two, there wasn't much in the way of diversity which I found extremely disappointing since Mars was (at least at the beginning) being held up as a genuine utopia. There was no mention of race beyond vague skin tone descriptions of characters, no mention of non binary gender identities, LGBTIA mentions, no mention of gender inequality that was clearly present and most if not all the women in the story were in artistic careers not in the sciences. Maybe I am being nitpicky but in my vision of a futuristic utopia I would want to see women in leaderships positions, in the 'hard' sciences, in the military, etc alongside men.… (mere)
