Candida Lycett Green was born in Dublin, Ireland on September 22, 1942. She went to Oxford Polytechnic (now Oxford Brookes University) to study sculpture, but left because she decided she lacked talent. After a number of secretarial jobs, she wrote captions for Queen Magazine, before being fired vis mere for her connections with Private Eye, a magazine she helped create. She was a writer, broadcaster, and journalist. Her books included Goodbye London, England, and The Dangerous Edge of Things. She also edited two volumes of her father John Betjeman's letters.
