If you're an average American, you've probably seen dozens of car chases over the years, dashing across the television or movie screen, wreaking havoc on the streets of New York, LA, Chicago, San Francisco, et al. But have you ever wondered what a car chase in your neighborhood would look like? Who would be chasing whom? Where would they go? What obstacles would a chase need to overcome if it avoided the city expressways? Well, Ms. Graham has turned her creative talents to those very issues. The Infamous Car-chase is an excerpt that's not really an excerpt. It could have been a chapter of her earlier work, Gathering Seeds, if you didn't mind the plot taking a 90-degree turn and theme collapsing into total silliness. Instead, she's kept it as a separate entity, an untold story, a dream, a hoax, an imaginary tale. What if Elena Meyer, in a fit of rage, drove off in her music teacher's car? What if Sean Reilly commandeered the closest available vehicle to try and catch her? What if Elena's mother chased both the car and the ice cream truck, her fear for her child making her oblivious to the sirens travelling in her wake? What if Catherine Graham so lavishly illustrated and illuminated the manuscript so that each page was a work of art? Ah, then you would have a fine tale to keep on your shelf.

The problem with having a creative child is that anything is fodder for further creativity. Take this collection of comics. Last fall we downloaded the game Escape Velocity Nova. The game contains a few storylines, which one can follow through to obtain fame and fortune. The storylines are interrelated, often featuring the same characters. My dear daughter followed three of these storylines and promptly sat down to create her own tale of the EV Nova universe. Like most Cathrineal literature, the cast is predominantly female and the story is chock full of in-jokes which nobody outside our family would probably get. But she's my daughter and I love her and am usually delighted with her creativities.

Sadie McAllister, a young trader of the Federation, finds herself part of an ancient Polaran prophecy, and her name changed to Ory'hara. Together with her adopted people, she must defeat the corrupted Bureau and its evil leader Commander Krane. That's pretty much like the game. But Ory'hara has an idea that deviates sharply from the game...and makes for the rest of the plot. I had fun writing and drawing it!

More silliness, set in the universe of the EV Nova computer game. This time Ory'hara has gotten married and has a baby. The motherhood gags are intersperced with the mystery--has Commander Krane returned? This one's so good I may have to go out and buy a binder to keep it in. Of course, I'm just the proud parent, so you have to take my words with a grain of salt...

Ory'hara is happily married and the mother of a baby who alternately sobs or eats people's hair. Then, suddenly, she hears news--Commander Krane has reappeared. Finally, Ory'hara's dear friend Mu'randa has her own problems--Ory'hara's highschool friend Adrienne Wassily is exposing Mu'randa's daughter to Shaun Cassidy. And then...well, I doubt you'll ever get your hands on this. It was even more fun to write, though!

What do you get when you combine the heroines and storylines of three classic works, walk-on appearances by dead composers, Mary Queen of Scots and a few quotes from a computer manual? Well, for me, I got a Christmas present--a handwritten and illustrated manuscript bound into a cardboard and aluminum foil cover with Scotch tape. I also got a unique record of what was on my daughter's mind in 2003: ballets, classical music, the Royal Diaries books and The Robin Williams Mac OS X Book. Now, in all objectivity, the writing and artwork is crude, with all the craft you might expect from a fifth grader. On the other hand, as a father, I have no objectivity, so I think it is a masterpiece, worthy of a most honored place on my shelf. Either way it's just plain weird, just like my kid. Let this serve as a warning to all of you parents who might be thinking about encouraging your child's creativity.

Excuse me, that's not true. I'm Catherine Graham author of this "book", and at fourteen I still distinctly remember that I was not into the Royal Diaries yet. For those of you who want a summary:

Carmen, Juliet and Aida, heroines of tragic plays, operas, and/or ballets, are determined to give their sisters in tragedy a happier life, and to save each other from their untimely almost-demises. Also, there's a budding romance between Mercedes, the trio's Spanish helper and James, a young man in the court of Mary, Queen of Scots (who shows up in this story uninvited). Includes pictures of "productions" and "the movie" in the back. ;)
