In 1948, the city of Reading, Pennsylvania was celebrating the 200th anniversary of its founding (and the 101st as a city). As a gift to the Berks County area, the Wyomissing Industries (Textile Machine Works, Berkshire Knitting Mills, and Narrow Fabric Company) produced this volume, edited by noted historian Arthur D. Graeff. Starting with the iron industry to clothing, agriculture, food, transportation and more, the book lists notable companies that existed in the past and that were still in existence in 1948. Some of those companies are still here today and others like the Reading Railroad, Textile Machine Works, the Berkshire Knitting Mills have slipped into the annals of history.

Florence Starr Taylor's color, and black and white drawings illustrate the book, giving it a distinct Pennsylvania Dutch flavor. This is an enjoyable look back to the way things used to be and a memory of my childhood.
