Kort biografi: Dale Gottlieb is an American children's author and artist. She was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was educated at the School of Art and Design at Alfred University. Her work is influenced by primitive art, appearing naive, yet dealing "with complex emotions and issues concerning humanity." She has written and/or illustrated over twenty-five books for young people, and has exhibited her artwork in shows across the USA, and internationally. Where Jamaica Go? af Dale Gottlieb

I had mixed feelings about this story. First, I really liked the language of the story. The story is told in a reggae beat and has a nice bounce to it when you read it, it also fits the language of the main character herself. Some Jamaicans talk in this manner and it sounds very cool when you hear it, and bringing that into a story made this fiction book very realistic. I also liked the illustrations in the story, they matched and flowed with the language and the writing; and the author created the illustrations in glowing colors to express the Caribbean life and express the joyful spirit of the girl. Though there were some good characteristics, I didn’t like how it was split up into three very short stories. It would have made more sense just to combine the stories because it seemed like the author was just describing how the young girl navigated through the island, and the events seemed to be in chronological order. Overall, I believe it was a good cultural book with the message of enjoying life and the little things in it. Having positive vibes and being joyful so that other around can see and be joyful to. Just being happy with the world around you and savoring moments in life.… (mere)

Seeing-Eye Willie af Dale Gottlieb

Seeing Eye Willie is about an old homeless man who wears the exact same thing every day no matter the weather. There are many rumors as to why Willie is blind in one eye, homeless, wears a snake skin around his neck, always in a coat, and wears Chinese embroidered slippers. Willie sits in front of the same grocery store every day and always has a flute and duffle bag with him. Dale comes up with her own extravagant story of how Willie crawled around the world obtaining different items as he entered, China, Egypt, Russia, India, Africa, and Alaska. The story begins with Willie being a baby in Africa and a Lion trying to comfort Willie scratches his eye out making him blind. The lion nurses Willie back to health and gives Willie a wooden flute. Then Willie goes to Egypt where a snake escorts him to India and gives him a snakeskin. India is complicated with arguments so Willie slips on through. Willie continues his travels as a baby through various countries collecting different items. When Willie returns he becomes an old man. Dale would like to share her story with Willie one day and her father tells her he is sure that Willie has his own story. Dale comments that she would love to be there when Willie tells his story.… (mere)
