After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design, Carter launched his career as an award-winning freelance illustrator in New York City. His book and editorial work eventually led to two Society of Illustrators Gold Medal Awards and the publication of 21 New Yorker covers, and counting.

Carter's work as a character designer began with DreamWorks' first animated feature, Prince of Egypt, and he went on to design for many classics, such as Sinbad, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, Brave, Open Season, Hotel Transylvania, The Croods, Coco, and Despicable Me to name a few. His work in animation has been recognized with six ASIFA Annie Award nominations for character design work, with two Annie Award wins for Ratatouille and The Croods. In addition to his character design work, Carter has written and illustrated seven award winning children's books for Simon & Schuster pub.

A book where the cactus is the main star? I hadn't seen that before. But a book about someone being "prickly" (get it? Prickly?) and wanting to be alone.....until they don't anymore? I have seen that.

The watercolor illustrations are a huge element that make this book worth reading. If the illustrations were more colorful (fitting a Southwest theme) it would have felt more obnoxious. I loved the subtlety. I loved all of the different characters that encounter our cactus friend.

Phillip’s best friend is Brock. No one else can see him. They call him Phillip’s imaginary friend. One day they go to the fair and Brock rides on the rides with Phillip. When Phillip goes to get some cotton candy Brock rides other rides. Brock gets sleepy and falls asleep in his father’s arms. They leave the fair, leaving Brock behind. Brock realizes Phillip is gone and begins to cry. He gets on the Ferris Wheel to get a better look and can’t find him. A young girl and her imaginary friend Princess Sparkle-Dust invite him home with them. Eventually they run into Phillip. Now when Phillip and Brock play with Anne and Princess Sparkle-Dust everyone thinks they are talking to each other.… (mere)

Zorro is amazing. His expressions are just exactly like my pug's expressions.
